During our 2017 arctic season, we will carry out a Citizen Science Project about Anthropogenic Marine Litter in East Greenland, for the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven. Our objective will be to gather data on plastic or other human pollution following a scientific protocol. We will work on two kinds of measurement:

  • GPS measured transects during the passages from Isafjordur to Greenland and back to record how much and which kind of litter we see floating in the water.
  • Garbage survey on the beaches in Greenland. We will work on defined beach areas to count and categorise the litter, and take photographs and aerial videos of the locations. Unfortunately, given the size of Boreal, we will not be able to bring the litter back with us.

The data will feed the AWI datasystem about the plastic pollution of the oceans.Check out the Litterbase, the Online Portal for Marine Litter.
