[Boreal ABE 2016] N°2, Saturday 20th August 2016, Isafjordur 66•04N 23•07W

Landing in Keflavik airport yesterday, we had the surprise to see the rifle coming between two pushchairs on the outsized luggage belt while the amo box trodded gently on the main belt among bags and suitcases coming from London, Paris and Copenhagen.

Perhaps the Icelandic approach of “hidden in plain sight”… This being said I diligently went to the Customs and once again had to be patient. Full due diligence, seals on the box, contact established with Isafjordur Customs… Alas that’s the price to pay to be safe when walking in the Arctic.

No more midnight sun at this time of the year. Nights are now very dark and, although we should benefit from one more hour of daylight up North, we will have to be vigilant in Greenland.

Short stopover at the Base Hotel – this one does not overpromise … and frankly does not underliver. It’s basic but perfectly caters for the needs of travellers and backpacker who want to rest for a night on arrival or before departure. Before going to bed, I had a chat with a Dane who was watching the handball semi-final between Denmark and Poland. Given the tight score, he got pretry excited and all his attention is on the large plasma TV screen – not basic this one – but he spared a few seconds to tell me that France is in final. Well 29-27 for Denmark; we are going to be face to face in a few days.

This morning after a short night, and a much neede wake-up call from Greg, we caught our flight to Isafjordur.

Small plane…

Small belt…

Having left London under the rain, we are fortunate to get to Isafjordur under a bright sun! Iceland is treating us.

Now is time for a short nap before heading out. We’ve been told that there are several humpback whales playing in the fjord. We’ll see…
